Create Dynamic URL Patterns & Profiles with Wildcard Matching
|Want to deliver a message or offer to all visitors that reach a product page for BRAND123? Instead of listing every product page associated with that brand, it would be much simpler and more flexible to use a wildcard. With the use of an asterisk (*) character, you can create dynamic patterns that can match a series profiles and URLs instead of just single instance.
There are a number or areas within Rekko’s visitor segmentation tool that will allow you to use a wildcard.
Where can you use URL wildcards in Rekko?

The placement of the asterisk(s) will determine the pages targeted by the wildcard. Here are some examples.

Note: Notice how the asterisk placed at the end of the URL does NOT include any URL using a secure (https) connection (e.g. cart pages).
Note: Notice how the asterisk before and after the string will allow you to target ALL urls that have ‘brand123’ in it regardless of what comes before or after that string.
Can you use wildcards anywhere else?
In addition to using it for URL parameters, the Rekko system also allows wildcards in the following profile configurations.
- Viewed products skus (real-time & historical) – SKUs viewed in current or past session can be targeted by inserting a portion of the URL. Depending on where you insert the wildcard will dictate what it will match. e.g. PAT* would match PAT123, PATABC and PAT456.
- Viewed categories (real-time & historical) – Categories viewed in current or past session can be tagged by inserting a portion of the category name. Depending on where you insert the wildcard will dictate what will match. e.g. *jackets* would match mens jackets, jackets clearance, and cotton jackets.
- IP Address – Great for testing a campaign internally! If you have a range of IPs for your office, you can activate the campaign on your live site but ONLY deliver to people in your office using a partial IP address.
- Products skus added to cart – This is similar to views but taken a step further by adding the product to the cart.
- Categories added to cart – This is similar to views but taken a step further by adding a product from a specific category to the cart.
- Promo code (real-time & historical) – Promo codes used in current or a previous session can be targeted by inserting a portion of the promo code. Depending on where you insert the wildcard will dictate what it will match. e.g. SAVENOW* will match SAVENOW5, SAVENOW10 and so on.
- Products skus purchased (real-time & historical) – This is similar to views but taken further by purchasing the product.
- Categories purchased – This is similar to views but taken further by purchasing a product from a specific category.
- Referrer – Target visitors based on their referrer, which is simply the URL that sent that visitor to you. If you do affiliate marketing, then segmenting visitors based on their referrer (and then delivering a unique experience based on it) can be done using a wildcard should you have multiple campaigns running.
