How do I create an A/B Test in Rekko?

Being able to test your creatives, messages, and offers is crucial for any website. We know this, and so we’ve done our best to make it simple and flexible for you.

Rekko has two types of A/B testing campaigns: traditional split-tests where the user can set the percentages for each variant, and self-optimization, where Rekko does the testing for you. Learn more about Rekko’s Self-Optimization feature here.

Creating an A/B Test in Content Delivery and A/B Testing Wizard

Using Rekko’s Content Delivery and A/B Testing Wizard, creating an A/B Test campaign has never been easier. We literally walk you through the steps!

Step One is where you choose what kind of campaign you’d like to create: Self-Optimization, Content Delivery, or Manual A/B.

  • Self-Optimization The “Easy-button” for A/B Testing. Select the goal for the campaign and COMET will continuously, automatically optimize delivery of the best variant. Read more about Rekko’s Self-Optimization here.
  • Content Delivery Deliver HTML, CSS, Javascript or images on Rekko-tagged page. If you don’t need to test variants and just want to deliver content, use this option.
  • Manual A/B Specify and design an A/B campaign by assigning delivery percentages to each creative or variant explicitly. Adjustments must be made manually.
  • Campaign Type in Content Delivery Wizard

Step Two allows you to choose which platforms you’d like your campaign to deliver to. Limit it to just desktop or mobile, or even choose which browsers or OS’s you’d like to target. This is a great way for you to create campaigns that are specific to mobile or desktop.

Step Three is where you choose what you’d like to deliver. If you’ve chosen either the Self-Optimization or Split-Test options, you can choose more than one on this step.

Choose what to Deliver in Content Delivery Wizard

  • Edit a Web Page Choosing this option allows you to edit content on your website by simply highlighting certain elements on your page and clicking Edit HTML. You’ll first be asked to confirm the URL for where you’d like to edit content, then your webpage will appear. Once it appears, your cursor will highlight certain elements on your page as a blue box. Find the element you wish to edit, like an image or text area, highlight and click for the Edit HTML option. Now you can modify an element on your site.
  • Custom HTML Use this option to create content you wish to insert into your page, like a banner. You’ll have the option to deliver the content via Div ID or CSS Selector.
  • Custom CSS Use this option to create content you wish to insert into your page, like a banner. You’ll have the option to deliver the content via Div ID or CSS Selector.
  • JavaScript Use this option to create content you wish to insert into your page, like a banner. You’ll have the option to deliver the content via Div ID or CSS Selector.
  • Image URL Use this option if there’s an image you’d like to deliver on your website, either as popon or even a banner.
  • Popon/Lightbox Use this option to deliver HTML/CSS/Javascript content as a popon on your website.
  • Toolbar This is a simple widget you use to deliver a toolbar at the top or bottom of your website. Simply display text with a call to action that links to any URL you need. Customize this toolbar with different colors and fonts as you need to make your message stand out.
  • Interstitial This is a full page overlay that really captures your visitors’ attentions. Display your message with a countdown timer that can auto-close the interstitial for you.
  • Expanding Banner A great way to pack a big message in a small space. The expanding banner is two parts: your small banner, and your expanded, larger version. This is delivered inline as Div ID or CSS Selector.
  • If you want to add multiple of the same content type, or if you wish to delete one you’ve accidentally clicked on, just click on the variant type again and a sub menu will appear. You’ll have a couple options here: Add another variant of this type, or Delete.

Adding an additional variant of the same content type, or deleting one you've chosen.

Step Four is where you edit the content for the creative types you chose in Step Three. If you’ve chosen multiple variants in Step Three, you’ll see multiple tabs with the creative delivery types here.

If you’d like to rename your variants from “Variant C: Toolbar” to something like “Toolbar Message”, you can double click the name in the active tab to bring up the text field. This will allow you to edit and alter the name.

Step Five is where you choose which segments you’d like to target and which segments you’d like to exclude. You’ll see that there are two tabs: Target and Exclude.

  • (1) Target vs Exclude Use these tabs to toggle between the options to target or exclude the visitors who receive this campaign.
  • (2) Profile Aggregation By default, this option is set to ALL. If you have multiple profiles selected, ALL will insure that each element is fulfilled prior to the campaign delivering. If ANY is chosen, any visitor that fulfills at least one of the profiles selected will receive the campaign. In most cases, users will want ALL to be selected.
  • Step Six allows you to choose a Goal for your campaign. Goals are set up at the campaign level and give you another measurement of success. You can choose simple goals like each time someone clicks your campaign, or you can use transactional goals like each time someone receives your campaign and then purchases with the coupon code you display.

Step Seven is optional. Here, you’re able to select whether or not you’d like this campaign to deliver more than once per session with an easy check of the box, or opt to have reports sent to you nightly about how the campaign is performing.
